The Essential Components Of An Accessible Exam Room For Persons With Mobility Disabilities

Posted by Michelle Booth on Nov 24 2017

Accessible examination rooms make it possible for patients with mobility disabilities including those who require the use of a wheelchair to receive proper medical care. Accessible features allow patients to move around the examination room and be able to receive the same level and quality of care as persons who do not have disabilities. Suggested accommodations include:

  • An accessible route in and out of the room
  • A door with adequate clearance
  • Appropriate placement of examination equipment
  • A larger amount of clear floor space

The number of accessible rooms in a practice all depends on the size of the facility and the needs of the patient population. Some doctor’s offices may only need one of these exam rooms while others might need several.

All new medical buildings and modified buildings must meet the ADA standards. These include measurements for entry doors and the amount of open floor space needed for turning.

Accessible Equipment

There are quite a few pieces of specialty equipment that you’ll need to make your office accessible and meet standards.

  • Adjustable height exam tables that lower for transfer
  • Portable floor lifts
  • Patient transfer lifts
  • Supports for the exam table

Keep in mind that different patient lifts may be needed depending on the circumstances. Some patients may only need additional support with balance and getting up to the exam table. Other patients may require more accommodations so the more equipment that’s available beyond the standard required by the ADA. It’s essential that providers communicate with patients in order to provide them with what they need.
