The Automated External Defibrillator (AED): A True Life Saver

Nov 26 2018

If someone suddenly went into cardiac arrest, would you know how to help them? Studies have shown that conducting CPR can drastically increase the chances of a victim’s survival. Surprisingly, however, many individuals hesitate to perform CPR because they don't know how to operate an automated external defibrillator (AED). But using this life-saving machine is actually quite simple. Read on to learn about what you should know!

Automated External Defibrillator 101

This portable device is an easy-to-use machine that analyzes a person’s heartbeat and then issues an electrical shock (if needed) to reestablish a regular rhythm. Used in conjunction with CPR, it provides the best chances possible for a victim's survival while you're waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.

Operating An AED

Luckily, using an automated external defibrillator is easy. It comes with adhesive patches, wire connectors, and the machine itself, which usually has a single button that issues the electrical shock. Visual aids are included with every device and the machine also gives you verbal instructions to help you through it. If you’re still uncertain what steps to take, the 911 operator can walk you through it as well.

Where To Get Training

Of course, experts always recommended getting actual certified training on CPR/BLS. The Red Cross and the American Heart Association offer these classes and you can get your certification the same day. In some cases, you can even get your training online! Either way, be sure to have a professional give you the training you need.

Also, make sure you know the location of your building's AEDs, so that, if the time comes, you’re prepared. And if you’re looking to add an automated external defibrillator to your work center, visit us online to browse our selection of top-quality products.
