Will Your Autoclave Pass the Spore Test?

Posted by Michelle Booth on Feb 8 2018

Are you familiar with spore tests for autoclaves? According to the Department of Health Services, whether you own a new or used autoclave, having a spore test performed monthly is required. According to cencalhealth.org, “Without biological indicator testing, adequacy/efficacy of the sterilization process cannot be assumed”. An internal chemical indicator strip should be used within each package, tray, or rigid container system to be sterilized. This will give you peace of mind that it is safe to release each load. Biological indicators are for use in monitoring health care steam sterilization processes, providing a direct measure of the lethality of the process. Use biological indicator strips either weekly or monthly according to your state regulations. This will provide 3rd party legal documentation of sterilization.

Why is spore testing important? Sciencing.com states, “It's necessary to test autoclaves regularly with Geobacillus stearothermophilus, which is one of the most heat-tolerant species of bacteria. If sterilization in an autoclave does not destroy the Geobacillus spores, the device is not working properly”. If you’re interested in spore test kits, available at affordable prices, please feel free to browse our selection.

If your autoclave fails the spore test, discontinue using it and find a used or new autoclave, as this piece of medical equipment is essential to have in your practice.
